Ballads from the Bordello
Ballads from the Bordello is Boo Hag’s second album of 2020. It is not a studio album. The seven songs were recorded live during two sessions while staying in the mountains of North Carolina. Scott E. Tempo built a suitcase drum kit, set up two zoom recorders in an old tobacco barn we were staying in and captured the sessions open air. Darren Woodlief was recruited and played upright bass on all the songs. Ballads is more or less a very modest tribute to the musical traditions I grew up listening to and loving. From the gospel and bluegrass traditionals I grew up singing with my family, to the street jazz of New Orleans that provided the soundtrack to so much of my life. I feel very fortunate to have had such a rich musical heritage. After Burial Ground’s release in March, we were not interested in a clean studio release and frankly the pandemic almost rendered doing anything musically together impossible both financially as well as practically. Ballads from the Bordello is completely transparent and raw. We do whatever we want. Enjoy.
